The rafters, pictured to the left standing at an angle, lift up the weight of your roof against gravity. Their slant also keeps water from pooling up. Connected between them rests the ridge board at the apex of the roof. Now, because of their angle, left unattended the rafters would push apart the walls of your house under their own weight. To prevent this, the ceiling joist gets fastened between them.
