What Makes Lightning?

Most of the more amazing processes in nature involve such complex processes that our brain sort of turn off when we try to learn about them. However, learning a little bit at a time, you can build up a pretty huge knowledge base. To help you do this, we’ve put together a basic explanation of what makes lightning strike:

lightning over black backdrop

How Lightning Strikes:

In thunder clouds (usually cumulonimbus) the water molecules inside the cloud constantly collide with themselves. This friction has the same effect your feet do when they rub into a carpet with socks on; they create electrical charges. For reasons we don’t entirely fathom, positive charges make their way to the upper portion of the cloud and negative charges go to the bottom.

When enough of these charges come together, they create an electric field. This field does two things; first, it pushes away the negative charges from the ground, giving it a positive charge. Next, it creates a “step leader”, basically ionized air (or plasma), that creates a path for the electrical current we call lightning.

Remember, storms can cause a lot of damage to your roof. If you want to take advantage of our storm damage repair, or any of our other services, here at Eclat Roofing, give us a call today. You can reach us at (214) 373-1500 or (817) 800-1881.

What Makes Hail?

hail that fell from the skyHail proves one of the most damaging natural phenomenon to property within the US; it costs us billions of dollars every year. Unfortunately, we don’t have many avenues of stopping it. If you find the whole process interesting, we’ve gone over what makes hail fall down from the sky.

The Basics:

Two things have to happen for hail to form. Updrafts must carry moisture high up into the atmosphere and the level of freezing atmosphere must get lowered. Cumulonimbus clouds offer the perfect climate for this. Their updrafts carry the moisture to freezing levels, where it turns into ice that then accumulates more moisture/ice. When it gets too heavy for the wind to hold up, it falls to earth as hail.

Now you know the basics of how hail forms. If you have experienced hail, you should have your roof inspected as fast as possible by a qualified professional. If you need storm damage repair in Dallas, we at Eclat Roofing would like to offer our services. To find out more, please give us a call at (214) 373-1500 or (817) 800-1881.

Important Article about the Insurance Industry

WATCHDOG | LEGISLATURE 15

Don’t let the insurance industry slip this bill past

This article is courtesy of THE WATCHDOG and DAVE LIEBER. We have chosen to share it here so that you as a consumer are aware of the changes that the insurance industry is trying to make.

The Watchdog wants you to know that the insurance industry is trying to slide something slick through the Texas Legislature toward Gov. Greg Abbott’s signing pen that’s designed to pay you smaller insurance claims.

How? By making it much harder for people with all kinds of insurance policies to use their rights to win deserved financial settlements in court. That’s not how the bill’s author explains it. Sen. Larry Taylor, R-Friendswood, who owns Truman Taylor Insurance Agency, claims this is pro-consumer.

Taylor said last week in a hearing for his Senate Bill 1628 that he wants to stop the march of lawyers and public adjusters who contact potential customers and offer to help file lawsuit against insurance companies. The result of this solicitatior for business, the senator claims is that 1 of every 3 catastrophic claims in Texas ends up in court.

He warns that if his bill doesn’t pass, insurance: companies will cut back their coverage offerings. “We need to take care of the consumers on this,” Taylor
said.

Ha. No, make that a double; ha-ha.

Texas Watch, a nonpartisan insurance watchdog, warns that Taylor’s bill is priority one in 2015 for the industry because, if passed, it would “succeed in stripping policyholders of their ability to force fair, timely payments ” says the group’s executive director, Alex Winslow.

If a company fails to pay in a timely way, it faces penalties under laws that have been
around for decades. Taylors bill, Texas Watch warns, promotes low-ball settlement offers, makes insurance company adjusters unaccountable for their actions and restricts the time allowed to file claims.

The bill also creates “gotcha” provisions that allow insurers to easily deny claims, Texas Watch says. A thin line separates consumers’ rights from annihilation, and this is the thin line. In this case the line was marked at the hearing by two state senators, both lawyers, who understood the layers beneath the anti-litigation spin given by the bill’s author.

Sens. Kirk Watson, D-Austin, and Rodney Ellis, DHouston, chewed up Taylor’s bill with legal questions that nonlawyer Taylor couldn’t answer. “Obviously, I did not draft
this,” Taylor said at one point about his bill.

Later, The Watchdog asked Taylor’s office who did write the bill. No answer. Taylor also declined an interview request. His office issued a statement that said, in part: “SB 1628 is a consumer protection bill. Without this bill, many Texans, particularly low-income homeowners, could lose access to home owners insurance, and insurance premiums for every Texas homeowner could increase….Lawsuit abuse is the only explanation for the recent surge in lawsuits following hailstorms?”

On the webcast for the March 31 hearing of the Senate Business & Commerce Committee, the camera offers a brief glimpse of the rear of the committee room, away from the microphones. I count 15 people in dark suits — the “blue suits,” I call them. Most were probably insurance lobbyists. Maybe one or more are the actual authors lusting after their dream bill.

Dallas lawyer Steven Badger was the first to testify, in favor. “Today, hail is all I do,” he explained, meaning he defends insurance, companies in lawsuits.

Badger laid out his view in a letter to me a year ago: “Over the last couple years a cottage industry has arisen in Texas comprised of roofers, appraisers, public adjusters, unlicensed public adjusters and various other characters who consider the insurance industry a slot machine that keeps on paying. The situation is totally out of control. Abuse and outright fraud is rampant”

Sen. John Whitmire, DHouston, took a counter view at the hearing: “There’s a reason people desperately turn to legal representation. Without that, they wouldn’t have gotten a good settlement.”

“This is going to affect rates every Texan pays” Taylor warned. “We may lose protection on roofs.” You’d think the insurance industry is hurting. It’s not. In the past year, companies writing homeowners insurance in Texas posted $1.4 billion in underwriting profits, Texas Watch says. Auto insurers earned $430 million in profits. And that’s before companies invested earnings for further profits.

Ellis said the first page of Taylor’s 20-page bill disturbed him so much, “I’m afraid to dig much deeper.” Taylor soothed him: “This is a work in progress.”

That’s what should scare us.

Note: News on a couple of The Watchdog’s pro-consumer bills: Senate Bills 188 and 189 from Watson passed-the Senate this week on 28-3 votes. They would make it illegal for home and auto insurance companies to raise rates on customers who ask questions about their policies but never file a claim.

On to the Texas House to achieve fairness for all Texas home and auto insurance policyholders.

What Do You Get With A Concrete Tile Roof?

When it comes to a new roof purchase, you want to make sure you have all relevant information. Since certain roof types work better in certain climates/conditions, or for certain needs, you should discuss them all with your roofer. Still, to help you understand the basics (and streamline that conversation) we’ve put together what you’ll get with a concrete tile roof:

Picture of concrete roof

Aesthetics:

If you picture a drab, dull, lifeless looking roof when you picture concrete tile, you’ve got the wrong idea. These roofs expertly emulate many classic styles (such as Spanish tile). A well-installed concrete roof will raise the value of your home significantly.

Longevity:

You’ll get a lot of use out of your concrete roof, maybe more than you will get to experience yourself; many roofs of this type last well over 100 years. On top of that, they require less maintenance than most other types of roofing.

Environmentally Friendly:

Unlike asphalt shingles, which get replaced every 10-15 years, these roofs don’t contribute to land fill waste nearly as much. Also, they can reduce energy costs, saving you money on cooling bills.

Hopefully now you’ll feel a little more comfortable about discussing your roofing options. If you have more questions, Eclat Roofing can help. We offer concrete tile roof installation alongside many other services. For more information, you can reach us at (214) 373-1500 or (817) 800-1881.

Main Components Of Your Roof

It may not always look that complicated, but a lot actually goes into your roof. While it may take a lot of time to learn all of this information, it doesn’t hurt for you to take in some of the basics for yourself. To help you do that, we’ve put together some basic information about the main components of your roof.

roof diagram

The rafters, pictured to the left standing at an angle, lift up the weight of your roof against gravity. Their slant also keeps water from pooling up.  Connected between them rests the ridge board at the apex of the roof. Now, because of their angle, left unattended the rafters would push apart the walls of your house under their own weight. To prevent this, the ceiling joist gets fastened between them.

That covers the bare bones of how your roof works. Should your roof need services in in Dallas, Tx, Eclat Roofing has you covered. If you would like more information, you can reach us at (214) 373-1500 or (817) 800-1881.

Frequently Asked Questions About Metal Roofs

Metal roofs continually remain one of the premiere options available for both commercial and residential applications. We’ve already listed the benefits associated with this roof material; now, we’d like to provide you with the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions regarding it:

metalroof

How do I choose from the myriad of options:

Because metal roofs come in a myriad of options (including the materials copper, zinc, steel, aluminum, and titanium, along with a host of different styles), it can be hard to choose the right one for you. So much goes into this that your roofer will need to discuss it with you personally to find the right choice.

Can I have skylights with my roof?

Yes. While any protrusions will need flashings installed around them, they can easily be installed. Most roofers suggest that a new skylight should get installed if the old one has been there over 10 years old when you get your new roof.

Can I walk on my roof?

Yes, because of their durable nature, metal roofs can be walked on. However, walking on a roof always remains a dangerous activity; exercise caution when on top of your roof.

Hopefully this answered any questions you had about this type of roof. If not, our professional roofers would be happy to assist you with anything you need. Here at Eclat Roofing, we offer residential metal roof installation alongside many other roofing services. For more information, give us a call at (214) 373-1500 or (817) 800-1881.

Benefits of Residential Metal Roofs

There is a wide variety of roof material options available on today’s market; it’s important to know which one is right for you. Sometimes gathering all the pertinent information can be tough. It helps when it’s all laid out together for you. Here’s a basic overview of the benefits of residential metal roofs:

metalroof

Choice Variety:

Metal roofs come in many different types: copper, zinc, steel, aluminum, titanium, etc. Steel and aluminum are the most common choices for home roofs. They all have minor differences that your roofer can go over with you before installation.

Long life span/hardy:

Metal roofs will generally last 40-70 years if kept up properly. This is a big advantage over asphalt shingles, which generally only last 15-25 years. Metal roofs can withstand high winds, heavy storms, hurricanes, and won’t ignite when struck by lightning. They’re resistant to insects, mildew, and rot. Metal roofs receive a Class A fire rating, the highest given.

Energy efficient:

Metal roofs reflect solar heat; this can cut house-hold energy costs dramatically. An extra layer of space can be added under the metal roof for better insulation.

These are the basic benefits associated with residential metal roofs. Here at ECLAT Roofing Inc, we offer residential metal roof installation alongside a host of other roofing services. For more information, please give us a call at (214) 373-1500 or (817) 800-1881.

How Gutter Robots Work

Technology has made some pretty amazing advances as time has passed. Now is a good time to take advantage of them. Cleaning gutters is usually a tedious chore for people. Did you know that gutter robots are now available to do the work for you? Here’s how they work:

gutter2

The most common gutter robot that you’ll run into is the LOOJ; they’re easy to operate. At about 2 inches tall and 3 inches wide, they fit snugly inside your gutter. They have long treads that allow them to move up and down. Attached to the front of the robot is an auger that spins rapidly in different directions to fling debris out into the open. There is even an attachment to hook the robot to your body so as not to decrease your mobility.

To start, you attach the LOOJ to your person to easily climb up a ladder to your gutter. Then, you put the robot in the gutter, taking off the handle/remote. When you get back to the ground, you can use the remote to send the robot up and down the gutters, clearing out debris. It will feel like a video game. Afterwards, you retrieve the gutter robot, wash it down, and you’re done. It’s as simple as that.

Clearing out your gutters is an important aspect of maintaining your roofs health. If you don’t, pooling water on the roof can cause damage. Here at Eclat Roofing INC, we offer a host of roofing services. For more information, give us a call at (214) 373-1500 or (817) 800-1881.
